GAITHERSBURG, Md.--ShareStream, a leading provider of digital media asset-management platforms for the education and healthcare industries, announced in collaboration with Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq:SUNW) the creation of a turnkey Digital Media Management and Delivery solution for Higher Education and e-Distance Learning.

The ShareStream platform, developed in collaboration with the Sun Center of Excellence for Scholarly Information at Georgetown University, delivers audio and video via streaming downloads and podcasts and has the capability of housing, managing, and securing media at an institution-wide level. The platform automates the process of encoding content, and provides a lecture-capture solution with slide synchronization. It catalogues and archives content with the appropriate metadata, secures and controls access to content, and audits user accesses, bringing higher education an “end-to-end” solution for rich media management and delivery. The solution is optimized to run on the Solaris 10 (TM) Operating System (OS) on both the x64 and SPARC ® server platforms.

Additionally, the ShareStream platform specializes in interoperability with universities’ and colleges’ internal systems, such as data services and learning management systems. At Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., ShareStream embeds its application in Blackboard, library catalogues and university web pages.

The platform also possesses high-level security and rights management features for media, including user-credential verification technology that performs authentication, authorization, and course-enrollment checking. ShareStream also provides location/IP address-restricted access to content as well as time duration-restricted access to content. This functionality ensures that only the appropriate individuals view media assets delivered through ShareStream.

“I’m thrilled that ShareStream’s collaboration with Sun Microsystems delivers a state-of-the-art digital media capability to universities and colleges around the world,” said ShareStream co-founder and CEO David Weinstein. “The combination of ShareStream’s secure media management platform with Sun’s line of high performance server and storage platforms provides the higher education information technology community an ‘all-in-one’ solution for their rich media management and delivery needs.”

“We are pleased that ShareStream has chosen to optimize their innovative solution for distance learning with the Solaris 10 OS running on both x64 and SPARC platforms,” said Kevin Roebuck, Director of e-Learning for Sun Microsystems. According to Roebuck, “Rich media applications, like ShareStream for e-Learning, require optimized and robust computing networks. Customers will find that the Sun FIREFire (TM) X4500 Hybrid server and storage platform running the Solaris 10 OS delivers best-in-class performance that drives business value and a great user experience while reducing IT operating costs.”
